meditation & kirtan

Meditation

The Sanskrit word for joy, Sukham, may be literally translated as "spaciousness." Just as we learn to make space in our bodies through the Asana practice, we learn to create space in our minds in the meditation practice. Space in our minds brings us the ability to experience our true interconnectedness - with grace and compassion (and without the limits imposed by a crowded, racing, overwhelmed mind).

A short meditation practice often takes place near the end of regular asana class. At other times, it is a separate offering at Bhava.

Kirtan

Kirtan is call and response devotional chanting, usually accompanied by an instrument such as the harmonium. Kirtan, like meditation, can carry us to a place of quiet and stillness.

The singing of kirtan in India goes back thousands of years in India. Phrases like Om Namah Shivaya or Sita Ram are repeated over and over to simple melodies. Kirtan is effortless and enjoyable and does not require a good singing voice, the ability to sing in tune, or memorization of lyrics.

Kirtan is offered at Bhava, by donation, usually on the fourth Sunday of each month at 7:30 p.m. Please see our schedule for possible changes in the date.

ALL are welcome – kids, newcomers, old-timers...Light Prasad is served (food prepared with love) and is usually a fresh fruit salad. Feel free to bring vegan food to offer and share or just come! This is a truly special event.

Sbubalananda PhotoShubalananda (Larry Kopp) has been leading kirtan at Bhava for many years. He has studied with Neem Karoli Baba, Sathya Sai Baba, Karunamayi and Shree Maa. His guitar and harmonium playing along with his rich voice and stories make each Kirtan a fun and enlivening event.
